I want to dedicate this song to the memory of Leo Mullen Sr. a dear friend, long ago departed. When I was a child he read this poem to our families around a campfire. His voice was musical, sliding over every stanza like a penguin going into the water. Just before the final reveal he paused for a very long time, cleaning his glasses and smiling, as we all sat in abject terror. The laughter that followed was the well deserved reward of a master showman. I had nightmares for weeks.
Aaron J. Shay has performed this song with me many times all over the world. He provides the perfect foil to the “all over the place” nature of my arrangement. The moment in the song when Aaron asks if Sam McGee just died, was inspired by a real interaction I had with a friend after performing the song’s debut. He mentioned that it was unclear when in the song Sam McGee dies. I’m glad Aaron can help me draw a big red circle around it.

Compelling stories that are well written, not to mention beautifully sung, accompanied by beautiful instrumentation. I found Aaron J. Shay's music under a strange set of circumstances and was instantly fascinated by it, this album contains some of my favorite songs by him. Hyphonetics
