about

Not Yet is one of my oldest songs, and I still don't feel like it is complete. I have always seen my art as a fluid thing in a constant state of evolution. It is no great secret that when I debut a "new song" for a crowd it is, at best %70 complete. The best material comes from that flash of inspiration in front of a crowd, or at least it often does for me, provided the song has a solid spine to begin with.

I wrote this during a deep bout of depression after a friend died. It has become a kind of mantra for me during dark times, but it also carries a lighter meaning. Instead of saying that I cannot do a particular thing, say juggling, or speaking French, now I say, "Not Yet." It is never too late to learn something new, or fix something broken, or keep changing a song. The high speed finish of this was written some two years after the initial reccordion, I'm glad I've got both versions to watch my baby grow.

lyrics

What do we say to death today?
NOT YET! NOT YET!
What do we say to death today?
NOT YET! NOT YET!
What you gonna do when the reaper comes,
well as for me, I’ll bite my thumb.
And I’m gonna tell ‘im…
NOT YET! NOT YET!

I’ll put a feather in my cap, and charge right up that hill.
I don’t care that I might die, after all, we all will.
I’m gonna do what I have to do,
to make sure I come home to you,
After all the monsters, I have killed.

Upon the sea, beyond the storm, I ride.
Davy Jones, down in your locker, I’m not gonna lie.
None of this, brings fear to me,
I spit in the face of the wind and sea!
For this, iddint the day, that I die!

Because I’ve seen my death, a thousand times, in my dreams.
Not such a bad way to go, it seems.
Since how you go, is up to chance,
you might as well, just join the dance.
And run into the maelstrom with a scream!
