Years ago I got a letter from an old friend, and sometime romantic interest. The letter contained the line, "we'll never be simple." It was a perfect encapsulation of almost any matter of the heart, it's never simple, but that need not be a bad thing.

Some songs are built bit by bit, from rhyming couplets, and content one is dared to include. (See: 'Drinkin' Night') Others are found, excavated like a sculpture from a dictionary sized block of words. (See: 'Potluck') This one all poured out in one go, like it was always there in my mind, waiting for a key.

This album took nearly two years to record because I wanted to wait for all the right pieces. Claire Healy is one of those pieces and I am so happy to have her as part of this reccordion. She showed me this song could be a duet, and it works so much better that way.
